You might see a cat or kitten for sale at a Kansas City pet store and assume that buying a cat is the only option. Or you might, as many people do, believe that a cat for sale from a store or a breeder in Kansas City is somehow “better” than one you might find for adoption in a Kansas City animal shelter. This is a common misconception, and it couldn’t be further from the truth. The cats and kittens available for adoption at your local shelters and rescue groups are wonderful, sweet, healthy companions who are homeless through no fault of their own. Many times, animals end up in shelters simply because their former owner encountered a financial hardship and could no longer afford to care for them, or perhaps even lost their own home. Whatever the reason, most cats and kittens in shelters are great former pets who have lived in homes, and are often already litterbox trained.

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is a private non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1912. We strive to promote the general welfare of dogs and cats in the greater Kansas City area. We do this by providing education, preventive veterinary care, adoptions, and spay/neuter services to prevent pet overpopulation.Paws Crossed is a section 501(c)3 no kill foster-based rescue group based in the Kansas City, Missouri and Johnson County, Kansas metro areas. We are dedicated to rescuing pets left homeless, in high euthanasia shelters, and those in danger of abuse and neglect. We assist pets without regard to age, breed or ease of placement to the extent our finances allow, with the pets in greatest need taking priority. Animals in our care are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated, and provided additional veterinary care as needed. Our animals are placed in foster homes where they wait for placement in a permanent home.
