But before you run out and by any baby gate with a pet door, be sure to avoid any gates that are made from wood. If your puppy dog loves to chew then his sharp teeth will quickly shred a wooden baby gate to pieces, leaving behind some nasty splinters that you don’t want your baby to touch. LOVE!! barn door baby gate or pet gate!! Our pets and baby have outgrown the Dutch door we made at our house, but now it serves as a noise block from the AC/heater, without blocking to much air for the return. We made ours from a core door cut in 1/2 with a shelf on top. I like this one better.I thought a baby gate with pet door was a great idea: Keep kid in while keeping the pets roaming free. I guess I should have explained that to the kid... I look over and she's on the other side. I start filming and she reopens the door (which she had closed) and ta-dah!I show how I made the "Carlson Extra Tall and Wide Walk Through Door Pet & Baby Safety Gate" work for my tiny 2 lb lionhead rabbit and work for my 2 year old son! My son used to crawl through the tiny pet gate at the bottom but not anymore! LOL! YEAH! Now I can keep the rabbits safe on one side of the gate and my little man can watch but not touch on the other side. I love that this baby gate has a door so I don't have to climb over it and break my neck!A related idea, essentially an opposite of the pet door, is the pet gate, an easily human-operated portal that keeps pets in (or out) and thwarts their attempts to open it, e.g. with a thumb-operated switch or a smooth door handle, and which is tall enough that it cannot be jumped over by the type of pet for which it was designed. Styles vary, but they are typically made of wooden or metal bars or a wire lattice, and have adjustable widths so that they can be used to span arbitrary entrances, hallways or windows. Common uses are to keep pets inside while ventilating a room by opening an unscreened door, or keeping pets out of a baby's room or a dining area.A pet door or pet flap (also referred to in more specific terms, such as cat flap, cat door, dog door, or doggie door) is a small portal in a wall, window or human door to allow to enter and exit a house (or other structure) on their own without needing a person to open the door. Originally simple holes, the modern form is a hinged and often spring-loaded panel or flexible flap, and some are electronically controlled. They offer a degree of protection against wind, rain, and larger-bodied intruders entering the dwelling. Similar hatches can let dogs through fences at stiles. A related concept is the pet gate, which is easy for humans to open but acts as a secure pet barrier, as well as innovative automated left- or right-handed pet doors. This isn’t a pet gate, but I had to include it. A dutch door is a great solution for keeping children safe in one room while not closing them off completely. This would also work for pets, though you may want to consider putting in some type of opening or “window” since they love to see what is going on.
